Spoonbill is an endangered species and their breeding population is decreasing in Turkey. We estimate its breeding population is min.600-800 pairs. The species highly depend on wetlands and Turkey’s wetlands have many challenges; such as habitat destruction, water intervention, water pollution etc. We have very little data on spoonbill population in Turkey such as their breeding success, feeding ecology & migration way. To find out migration routes of the species, we started a ringing scheme for the species in 2007. For a starting point, we put color rings for 6 young. We used 4 plastic color rings at one individual (see picture), supported by Otto Overdijk from Netherlands, Spoonbill Network Group, and fixed them on both tibias of the young.
Could you please contact us, if somebody observes a spoonbill with color rings as the picture.
